My mom taught me this trick to diminish dark age spots on my hands in just 3 mins with 0 effort. Here’s how it works

If you’re referring to the viral “3-minute trick” for age spots on the hands, be skeptical of the promise. No home remedy can reliably make true age spots disappear in three minutes.

What are age spots?

Age spots (solar lentigines) are flat brown or gray-brown patches caused mainly by long-term UV exposure. They’re common on the backs of the hands and become more noticeable with age.

What do these viral tricks usually involve?

Posts commonly recommend rubbing the spots with things such as lemon juice, baking soda, vinegar, toothpaste, hydrogen peroxide, or other household ingredients. These may temporarily make skin look different because of drying, exfoliation, or irritation—but they don’t safely remove the excess pigment.

In fact, irritating the skin can cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, potentially making dark spots worse, particularly in darker skin tones.

What actually helps?

For genuine age spots, better-supported options include:

Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen on the hands every day. This is essential to prevent spots from getting darker and new ones from developing.
Topical retinoids can gradually improve pigmentation and skin texture.
Hydroquinone may be prescribed or recommended in some circumstances for pigmentation.
Dermatological treatments such as cryotherapy, laser therapy, intense pulsed light, or chemical peels can remove or lighten solar lentigines more quickly, but they carry risks and should be appropriately selected.
One important warning

Don’t assume every dark spot is an age spot. A spot that is new, changing in size/color/shape, unusually dark, bleeding, itching, or different from your other spots should be examined by a dermatologist because some skin cancers can resemble age spots.

Bottom line: A “3-minute, zero-effort” kitchen remedy is not a proven way to erase age spots. Consistent sun protection and, when desired, evidence-based dermatological treatments are much safer and more effective.
