“7 medications that cause severe dementia and profound brain damage” — is this true?
That headline is far too strong. There are medications that can cause confusion, delirium, sedation, or cognitive impairment—particularly in older adults—but it is inaccurate to say that seven medications simply “cause severe dementia and profound brain damage.”
The American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria identifies medications that may pose greater risks for adults 65+, including certain drugs with anticholinergic or sedating effects. Medication groups that deserve particular attention
First-generation antihistamines

A medication can cause acute confusion or delirium without causing permanent brain damage. Conversely, prolonged exposure to some medications may be associated with increased long-term cognitive risk, but research is complicated by the fact that the illnesses being treated—such as anxiety, insomnia, depression or urinary problems—can themselves be associated with dementia risk.
A large study of potentially inappropriate medications in older adults, for example, did not find that simply having one of these medications meant a person would develop dementia.

Don’t stop medication abruptly
