How to Make Your Jewelry Shine Again: A Simple Cleaning Method

A simple cleaning method can bring back the shine to many types of jewelry, but the safest method depends on the metal and gemstones.

✨ For ordinary gold or silver jewelry

  1. Fill a bowl with lukewarm water.

  2. Add a few drops of mild dish soap.

  3. Soak the jewelry for about 5–10 minutes.

  4. Gently brush crevices with a very soft toothbrush.

  5. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

  6. Pat dry with a soft microfiber or jewelry cloth.

For silver that has tarnished, a silver-polishing cloth is usually safer than homemade abrasive mixtures.

⚠️ Don’t use the same recipe on everything

Avoid soaking or aggressively scrubbing jewelry containing pearls, opals, turquoise, coral, emeralds, or glued-in stones. Some gemstones and finishes can be damaged by water, chemicals, heat, or abrasion.

Also be cautious with viral hacks involving toothpaste, baking soda, vinegar, or bleach. They can scratch metal, damage plating, or harm certain gemstones.

Best rule: If the piece is valuable, antique, plated, or contains delicate gemstones, use a method recommended specifically for that material or have it professionally cleaned.
