Why might some women distance themselves from their husbands as they age?

The idea that women generally “distance themselves” from husbands as they get older is too broad. Many couples remain close or become closer in later life. When emotional, physical, or social distance does develop, there are usually multiple possible reasons.

1. Changes around menopause

Menopause can bring sleep problems, hot flashes, mood changes, vaginal dryness, and painful sex. These symptoms can affect energy, desire, and intimacy. Vaginal dryness and discomfort are treatable, so painful sex doesn’t simply have to be accepted as part of aging.

2. Long-standing relationship problems

Years of unresolved arguments, poor communication, unequal responsibilities, or feeling emotionally neglected can become more noticeable after children leave home or work responsibilities change. Research on older couples has found that quality of interaction and communication are important factors in marital satisfaction.

3. Different expectations about retirement and aging

Retirement can dramatically increase the amount of time couples spend together. Differences over finances, household responsibilities, caregiving, social activities, or personal space may create tension if they haven’t been discussed.

4. Health and physical changes

Chronic pain, illness, disability, medications, sleep problems, and changes in body image can affect affection and sexual intimacy. These issues can affect either partner—not just women
