How to Make Your Jewelry Shine Again: A Simple Cleaning Method
For many solid gold, platinum, and durable gemstone pieces, gentle cleaning at home can remove everyday oils, dirt, and residue and restore some of the shine.
✨ Simple method
You’ll need:
- A bowl of lukewarm water
- A few drops of mild dishwashing liquid
- A very soft toothbrush or jewelry brush
- A soft, lint-free cloth
Steps:
- Mix a small amount of mild dish soap into lukewarm water.
- Place the jewelry in the solution for about 5–10 minutes.
- Gently brush around the setting, underneath stones, and other areas where dirt collects.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- Pat dry and gently polish with a soft cloth.
⚠️ Don’t use the same method on every piece
Be particularly careful with pearls, opals, turquoise, coral, emeralds, and other porous or delicate gemstones. Don’t soak these unless the manufacturer or jeweler says it’s safe. Pearls should generally be wiped with a soft, slightly damp cloth rather than submerged.
Also avoid DIY recipes involving toothpaste, baking soda, bleach, vinegar, or abrasive powders unless a jeweler specifically recommends them. Abrasives can scratch metals or stones, while chemicals can damage certain finishes and gemstones.
For gold-plated or silver-plated jewelry, aggressive polishing can wear through the coating.
💎 When professional cleaning is better
If a stone is loose, the setting is damaged, the piece is antique/heirloom jewelry, or you’re unsure what the gemstone or metal is, have a jeweler inspect it before cleaning.
Bottom line: For jewelry that is safe to wash, mild soap + lukewarm water + a very soft brush + thorough drying is one of the safest general cleaning approaches.
