Constipation: Here are 3 natural remedies that facilitate the evacuation of stools according to a dietician

Constipation: 3 natural approaches that can make stools easier to pass

For occasional constipation, a few simple measures can help. They don’t work instantly for everyone, and “natural” doesn’t automatically mean risk-free.

1. Increase fiber gradually

Choose fiber-rich foods such as:

  • Prunes or kiwi

  • Pears and other whole fruits

  • Oats and whole grains

  • Beans and lentils

  • Vegetables

  • Ground flaxseed

Increase fiber gradually and drink adequate fluids, because suddenly adding a large amount can cause bloating and discomfort.

2. Drink enough fluid

Dehydration can make stools harder. Water is usually the simplest choice. Your needs vary according to your health, activity, climate, and medications. People with certain heart or kidney conditions may have prescribed fluid limits and should follow those instructions.

3. Move and use a regular toilet routine

Walking and regular physical activity can support normal bowel function. Try sitting on the toilet at a consistent time, especially after a meal, and don’t repeatedly ignore the urge to go.

A small footstool under your feet can also make the position more comfortable and may make passing stool easier.

When constipation needs medical attention

Seek medical advice for constipation that is persistent, recurrent, or a new change in bowel habits—especially later in life.

Get urgent care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a markedly swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, or significant blood/black stools.

If you’re constipated right now, tell me how many days it’s been and whether the stool is hard, pellet-like, or simply difficult to pass, and I can suggest the most appropriate next step.
