“The best vitamin for your legs”: what might actually be going on?
There isn’t one vitamin that universally fixes “dead feet,” heavy calves, or poor circulation. Those symptoms can have many causes, and taking a supplement without knowing the cause can delay appropriate treatment.
Possible causes
-
Vitamin B12 deficiency: Can cause numbness, tingling, burning sensations, weakness, or balance problems.
-
Vitamin D deficiency: Severe deficiency can contribute to muscle weakness and bone or muscle pain.
-
Iron deficiency: Can cause fatigue and weakness, although it isn’t usually the explanation for isolated heavy legs.
-
Peripheral artery disease: Reduced blood flow can cause calf pain or cramping during walking that improves with rest.
-
Nerve problems: Diabetes, spinal problems, and other conditions can cause numbness or burning in the feet.
-
Venous problems: Chronic venous insufficiency can cause heavy, aching legs and ankle swelling, particularly after standing.
-
Medication effects or electrolyte abnormalities: Some medicines and medical conditions can contribute to cramps or weakness
