23 Strange Signs Your Kidneys Might Be in Trouble

23 signs your kidneys might be having trouble

Kidney disease is often called a “silent” condition because early chronic kidney disease (CKD) may cause no noticeable symptoms. A blood test for eGFR and a urine test for albumin (ACR) are much more useful than trying to diagnose kidney disease from symptoms alone.

Some symptoms that can occur as kidney function declines include:

  1. Swelling in the ankles, feet, or legs

  2. Puffiness around the eyes, particularly in the morning

  3. Foamy or persistently frothy urine, which can indicate protein in the urine

  4. Blood or pink/red/brown urine

  5. Urinating much more or less than usual

  6. Waking repeatedly to urinate at night

  7. Dark or unusually cloudy urine

  8. Fatigue or unusual weakness

  9. Poor appetite

  10. Nausea or vomiting

  11. Unexplained weight loss

  12. Dry or itchy skin

  13. Muscle cramps

  14. Muscle weakness

  15. Headaches

  16. Difficulty concentrating or feeling mentally “foggy”

  17. Sleep problems

  18. Shortness of breath, particularly with fluid accumulation or advanced disease

  19. High blood pressure that is difficult to control

  20. Persistent metallic taste or altered taste

  21. Bad or ammonia-like breath

  22. Feeling unusually cold

  23. Persistent flank or lower-back discomfort — although this has many causes and isn’t a typical sign of CKD itself
