Why is it so important not to flush the toilet after every trip to the toilet to urinate?

Should You Avoid Flushing After Every Urination?

The claim that you shouldn’t flush after every trip to the toilet is mostly an internet myth. There is no general health recommendation that says you should leave urine in the toilet between uses.

Why might someone suggest waiting?

The main argument is saving water. Flushing a toilet uses water, so reducing unnecessary flushes can conserve water—particularly with older, high-volume toilets.

But there are trade-offs:

  • 🦠 Hygiene: Leaving urine sitting in the toilet can produce odor and isn’t especially sanitary, particularly in a shared bathroom.
  • 🧽 Cleaning: Repeatedly leaving urine in the bowl can contribute to unpleasant smells and buildup.
  • 🚽 Modern toilets: Many newer toilets use substantially less water per flush than older models.
  • 💧 Water conservation: If conservation is the goal, a better approach is to use a water-efficient toilet and fix leaks rather than routinely leaving waste unflushed.

What about the saying “If it’s yellow, let it mellow”?

That’s a water-saving slogan, not a medical rule. It can be reasonable in some households, but it isn’t necessary for your health.

And if you’re sharing a bathroom, have young children, are immunocompromised, or have concerns about hygiene, flushing normally is the sensible choice.
