What does the color of your urine say about your health?
Urine color is influenced by how hydrated you are, foods and drinks, medications, supplements, and medical conditions. Color can provide clues, but it cannot diagnose a disease by itself.
| Urine color | What it may mean |
|---|---|
| 🟨 Pale yellow | Usually a sign of adequate hydration |
| 🟡 Dark yellow/amber | Often means you’re dehydrated and need more fluids |
| 🟤 Very dark brown/tea-colored | Can occur with severe dehydration, certain medications, liver problems, or muscle breakdown; should be evaluated if persistent |
| đź©· Pink/red | Could be blood, but beets and some medications can also cause this color |
| đźź Orange | Dehydration or certain medicines can cause it; liver or bile-duct problems are another possibility |
| 🟢 Green | Uncommon; can result from certain medications, dyes, or occasionally infection |
| 🔵 Blue | Rare; can be caused by medications, dyes, or unusual metabolic/genetic conditions |
| ⚪ Cloudy/milky | May occur with a urinary infection, crystals, or other substances in the urine |
| 🫧 Persistently very foamy | Can indicate excess protein in the urine and deserves medical testing |
🚨 Colors that deserve attention
Red or brown urine that isn’t clearly explained by something you ate or a medication should be checked, particularly if you also have pain, fever, weakness, or reduced urine output.
Cloudy urine accompanied by burning when urinating, frequent urination, fever, or back/flank pain can indicate a urinary infection.
And don’t try to diagnose kidney or liver disease solely by looking at urine. A urinalysis and appropriate blood tests are much more reliable.
đź’§ What about completely clear urine?
Clear urine isn’t necessarily “healthier.” If your urine is consistently colorless because you’re drinking very large amounts of water, you may be overhydrating. Pale yellow is generally a reasonable target for many healthy adults.
If you tell me what color your urine is, how long it’s been that way, and whether you have any other symptoms, I can explain the most likely causes.
