Sleeping on Your Left Side: What It May Mean for Your Health

Sleeping on your left side is generally safe and can be comfortable for many people. It isn’t a secret health test, and your preferred sleeping position doesn’t by itself indicate that something is wrong.

Possible benefits

  • Heartburn/reflux: Left-side sleeping may reduce nighttime acid reflux for some people because of the position of the stomach and esophagus.
  • Pregnancy: Side sleeping is commonly recommended later in pregnancy; many clinicians encourage side sleeping, with the left side often being comfortable, although you don’t need to force yourself to remain exclusively on the left.
  • Snoring: Sleeping on either side rather than flat on the back may reduce snoring and airway obstruction in some people.
  • Comfort: If it reduces back or hip discomfort for you, there’s no medical reason to change simply because it’s your preferred side.

What about the heart?

You may have heard that sleeping on the left side is “bad for the heart” because the heart is located slightly toward the left side of the chest. For most healthy people, this isn’t a concern. Some people with certain heart conditions may find one sleeping position more comfortable than another, but that should be individualized.

If you sleep on your left side

Try placing a pillow between your knees to keep your hips aligned and using a pillow that keeps your neck roughly straight rather than tilted upward or downward.

Bottom line: If you sleep comfortably on your left side and wake feeling rested, there’s generally no reason to change. The best sleeping position is the one that supports comfortable, good-quality sleep.
