The headline “New method: colonoscopy will no longer be an invasive examination” is misleading.
There are genuinely promising alternatives to conventional colonoscopy:
- Blood tests: A 2026 study reported an experimental blood test that detected 92% of stage I–III colorectal cancers and 81% of advanced adenomas. It is still being studied and does not replace colonoscopy yet. Reuters
- Stool tests (FIT): These are non-invasive and can be done at home. A positive result generally still requires a conventional colonoscopy. New York Post
- Virtual colonoscopy/CT colonography: This avoids inserting a conventional colonoscope, but bowel preparation is usually still needed, and abnormalities may require a follow-up colonoscopy. KitchenCrave
The key advantage of conventional colonoscopy is that doctors can remove polyps and take biopsies during the same procedure. The newer non-invasive tests generally cannot do that.
So, colorectal-cancer screening is becoming less invasive, but colonoscopy itself has not yet become non-invasive or obsolete. Reuters
