That viral claim is partly true but exaggerated. Baking soda can help with greasy messes, but there isn’t one preparation that’s safe for every surface.
Simple baking-soda grease paste
Mix:
-
3 tablespoons baking soda
-
1 tablespoon water
-
A few drops of dishwashing liquid
Stir into a thick paste.
-
Apply a thin layer to the greasy surface.
-
Leave it for 5–10 minutes.
-
Gently wipe with a soft sponge or microfiber cloth.
-
Rinse with clean water and dry.
This can be useful on stovetops, greasy cabinet surfaces, and some appliance exteriors, provided the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions permit it.
⚠️ Don’t use it everywhere
Baking soda can scratch or dull polished finishes, some stainless-steel surfaces, aluminum, natural stone, and nonstick coatings. Test an inconspicuous spot first.
Never mix cleaning products with bleach, ammonia, or other chemicals.
For heavy grease, dishwashing detergent is usually the main grease-cutting ingredient; baking soda mainly provides mild abrasive cleaning.
