❤️ Heart Attack at Home: Don’t Rely on a “10-Second” Trick

There is no 10-second maneuver that can reliably stop a heart attack or save your life. Viral advice about coughing forcefully, drinking water, changing position, or performing other tricks can delay lifesaving treatment.

If you think you’re having a heart attack:

Call your local emergency medical service immediately. Don’t wait to see whether the symptoms disappear.
Stop what you’re doing and sit or rest in a comfortable position.
Unlock the door if you’re alone, and keep your phone nearby.
Follow the emergency dispatcher’s instructions.
If you have been prescribed nitroglycerin for angina, use it exactly as previously instructed.
Don’t drive yourself to the hospital unless there is absolutely no alternative.

Typical warning symptoms include pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain in the chest, sometimes spreading to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen. Shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or unusual weakness can also occur.

What about aspirin?

For some adults with suspected heart attack, emergency medical professionals may recommend chewing aspirin, but it isn’t appropriate for everyone—for example, people with certain allergies or bleeding risks. Call emergency services first and follow their instructions rather than relying on an internet recipe.

If the person becomes unresponsive and isn’t breathing normally, start CPR and use an AED if available, following emergency-dispatch instructions.

Bottom line: The lifesaving “10-second” action is getting emergency help immediately, not performing a special physical trick.
