That headline is highly sensationalized. Liver disease can be serious, but the liver doesn’t literally “scream,” and many liver problems cause few or no symptoms in their early stages.
12 signs that can sometimes occur with liver problems
-
Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice)
-
Dark urine
-
Pale or clay-colored stools
-
Persistent or unusual fatigue
-
Loss of appetite
-
Nausea or vomiting
-
Itchy skin without an obvious rash
-
Abdominal swelling or pain, particularly in the upper-right abdomen
-
Swelling in the legs or ankles
-
Easy bruising or unusual bleeding
-
Confusion, difficulty concentrating, or unusual sleepiness
-
Unexplained weight loss
These symptoms don’t prove that the liver is the cause. Many have numerous other explanations.
🚨 Signs that shouldn’t be ignored
New jaundice, vomiting blood, black/tarry stools, severe abdominal swelling or pain, or new confusion or extreme drowsiness can indicate a serious problem and warrant urgent medical assessment.
And importantly, you don’t have to wait for symptoms to appear. Conditions such as fatty liver disease can be relatively silent, which is why people with risk factors may need routine medical evaluation and blood tests.
If you want, I can also explain which of these 12 signs are early warning signs versus symptoms of more advanced liver disease.
