If you have a heart attack at home, do this in 10 seconds and you can save your life.(1 / 2)

If you’re referring to the viral “10-second trick” for surviving a heart attack, there is no scientifically proven maneuver that can stop a heart attack in 10 seconds. Don’t waste precious time trying one.

If you think you’re having a heart attack

  1. Call your local emergency service immediately.

  2. Stop all activity and sit or lie down somewhere safe while waiting for help.

  3. If you have prescribed nitroglycerin, take it exactly as your doctor instructed.

  4. Ask the emergency dispatcher about aspirin. For some adults with suspected heart attack, chewing aspirin may be recommended if they aren’t allergic, aren’t taking a medicine that makes it unsafe, and don’t have active bleeding. Don’t delay the emergency call to take it.

  5. If the person becomes unresponsive and isn’t breathing normally, start CPR and use an AED if one is available.

Recognize the warning signs

Heart attack symptoms can include pressure or squeezing in the chest, shortness of breath, cold sweating, nausea, unusual weakness, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen. Symptoms can be less typical in women, older adults, and people with diabetes.

If this is happening right now, call emergency medical services now. Don’t drive yourself to the hospital and don’t wait to see whether the symptoms disappear.
