NEVER Use Magnesium If You Are Taking Any of the Following Medications

Magnesium supplements can interact with some medications, but the claim that you should “never use magnesium” with certain medicines is too broad. In many cases, the issue is simply timing doses apart rather than avoiding magnesium altogether.

Medications that deserve particular attention

  • Certain antibiotics — Magnesium can bind to some antibiotics in the digestive tract and reduce their absorption. This includes tetracyclines (such as doxycycline) and fluoroquinolones (such as ciprofloxacin). They generally need to be taken several hours apart.

  • Levothyroxine — Magnesium-containing products can interfere with absorption. Taking them at separate times is generally recommended.

  • Bisphosphonates — Medicines such as alendronate can have reduced absorption when taken with magnesium and other minerals.

  • Some diuretics and other medicines affecting magnesium levels — These can change how much magnesium your body retains or loses, so supplementation may require medical guidance.

  • Certain medicines in people with kidney disease — This is particularly important because impaired kidneys may not eliminate magnesium effectively, increasing the risk of excessively high magnesium levels.

One important distinction

Magnesium in a supplement or antacid/laxative can have different interaction considerations from the relatively small amount of magnesium naturally present in food.

If you’re taking prescription medication, don’t stop your medication or automatically stop magnesium based on an internet list. A pharmacist can check the exact combination and tell you whether you need a dosing interval.

If you give me the names and doses of your medications (and the magnesium product/dose), I can check the potential interactions specifically.
