If you’re taking amlodipine, the goal isn’t to stop healthy habits altogether, but to avoid habits that can worsen side effects or interfere with treatment. Amlodipine is commonly used long term for high blood pressure and angina.

8 habits to reconsider
Stopping amlodipine because your BP is normal
A normal reading may mean the medicine is working. Don’t stop it unless your clinician tells you to.

Taking double doses after missing one
If you forget a dose, don’t compensate by taking two. Follow the missed-dose instructions from your medication leaflet or pharmacist.

Drinking excessive alcohol 🍷
Alcohol can add to amlodipine’s blood-pressure-lowering effect and make dizziness or low blood pressure more likely.

Ignoring dizziness or faintness
Amlodipine can cause dizziness. Sit or lie down if you become dizzy, and avoid driving or machinery until you feel normal.

Failing to review your other medicines
Some antibiotics, antifungals, HIV medicines, immunosuppressants and other blood-pressure medicines can interact with amlodipine. In particular, simvastatin should generally be limited to 20 mg/day when used with amlodipine according to U.S. prescribing information.

Bottom line
Don’t treat amlodipine as a medicine you should “detox” from or routinely stop. Take it consistently, monitor your blood pressure, and report troublesome side effects rather than changing the dose yourself.

If you develop severe dizziness/fainting, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or severe persistent abdominal pain, seek urgent medical attention.
