What Does the Color of Your Urine Say About Your Health?

Urine color can provide clues, especially about hydration, but it can’t diagnose a condition by itself. Here’s a simple guide:

  • 🟨 Pale yellow: Usually a sign of good hydration.

  • 💛 Dark yellow: Often means your urine is concentrated and you may need more fluids.

  • 💧 Very clear: You may be drinking more water than you need. Occasionally clear urine isn’t a problem, but consistently excessive urination should be discussed with a clinician.

  • 🟠 Orange: Can result from dehydration or certain medications. If it persists without an obvious explanation, get medical advice.

  • 🩷 Pink or red: Sometimes caused by foods such as beetroot, but it can also indicate blood in the urine. Unexplained red or pink urine should be medically evaluated.

  • 🟤 Brown or cola-colored: Can occur with severe dehydration, certain medications, liver problems, or muscle injury. Persistent brown urine warrants prompt medical assessment.

  • 🟢 Green or blue: Uncommon; certain medications, dyes, or infections can cause this color.

  • ☁️ Cloudy: May occur with dehydration, crystals, or a urinary tract infection, particularly if accompanied by burning, urgency, fever, or pelvic/back pain.

🚨 When not to ignore it

Seek medical attention for visible blood in your urine, persistent unusual discoloration, very dark urine, or urine changes accompanied by fever, severe pain, vomiting, jaundice, or difficulty urinating.

And remember: hydration isn’t the only factor. Foods, vitamins, medications, and medical conditions can all change urine color. A persistent change is more meaningful than a single unusual-looking sample.
