How to wash yellowed pillows: 3 tips to keep them white and new

šŸ›ļø How to Wash Yellowed Pillows: 3 Tips to Make Them Fresh Again

Yellowing is common because pillows gradually absorb sweat, body oils, saliva, skincare products, and moisture. Before washing, always check the pillow’s care label—some foam and specialty pillows should not be machine-washed.

1. 🧺 Pre-treat the yellow areas

For washable pillows, remove the pillowcase and protector. Apply a small amount of liquid laundry detergent to visibly yellow areas and gently work it into the fabric. Let it sit for about 10–15 minutes before washing.

2. 🫧 Wash according to the care label

Wash two pillows together when possible to help balance the machine. Use the warmest water permitted by the manufacturer’s instructions and an appropriate amount of detergent. An extra rinse can help remove detergent residue.

Avoid automatically adding bleach—especially chlorine bleach—as it can damage some fabrics and fillings and isn’t necessary for every pillow.

3. ā˜€ļø Dry completely

Dry the pillow thoroughly according to its care instructions. If machine-drying is allowed, use a suitable low or medium setting and periodically fluff the pillow. Never store a pillow while it’s still damp, because trapped moisture can encourage mold and unpleasant odors.

✨ Keep pillows whiter for longer

Use a washable pillow protector underneath the pillowcase, wash bedding regularly, and make sure your hair and skin are reasonably dry before going to bed.

Important: Don’t mix household cleaning chemicals such as bleach, vinegar, ammonia, or hydrogen peroxide. Some combinations can produce dangerous fumes.

Bottom line: The safest approach is pre-treat → wash according to the manufacturer’s label → dry completely. If a pillow remains badly yellowed, smells musty, or has deteriorated filling, replacing it may be more hygienic than trying increasingly harsh cleaning methods.
