🍌 Bananas Can Last Longer With One Simple Kitchen Item
The “one kitchen item” often mentioned in this tip is plastic wrap. Wrapping the stems can slow banana ripening somewhat, but the claim that it reliably makes bananas last exactly 10 days longer is exaggerated.
Try this method
-
Separate the bananas if you want to slow ripening individually.
-
Tear off a small piece of plastic wrap.
-
Wrap it snugly around the stem/top of each banana.
-
Keep unripe or ripe bananas at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat.
-
Once they’re ripe, refrigerating them can extend their usable life. The peel may darken, but the inside can remain good for several more days.
Why might it help?
Bananas naturally produce ethylene, a plant hormone that promotes ripening. Covering the stem may reduce ethylene exchange and slightly slow the process.
Even better: control the environment
Keep bananas away from other ethylene-producing fruits such as apples, avocados, and ripe pears if you want to delay ripening. For very ripe bananas, peel and freeze them for smoothies, baking, or oatmeal.
Bottom line: Stem wrapping can help, but there’s no guaranteed “10-day” extension. Temperature, variety, and how ripe the bananas are when purchased make a big difference.
