7 Signs of Arthritis You Shouldn’t Ignore

If you mean what this headline is getting at, arthritis isn’t one single disease, and early symptoms can vary considerably. The headline is essentially warning people not to dismiss persistent joint symptoms.

7 signs worth getting checked

  1. Persistent joint pain — especially pain that keeps returning or lasts for weeks.

  2. Joint swelling — a joint may look enlarged or feel puffy.

  3. Stiffness — particularly stiffness after waking up or after being inactive.

  4. Reduced range of motion — difficulty fully bending, straightening, or moving a joint.

  5. Warmth or redness around a joint — more suggestive of inflammation or another joint problem.

  6. Pain that interferes with daily activities — such as walking, gripping objects, climbing stairs, or getting dressed.

  7. Symptoms in several joints or symptoms accompanied by fatigue/fever — this can occur with inflammatory forms of arthritis and deserves medical assessment.

Important: These symptoms don’t automatically mean you have arthritis. Injuries, infections, gout, nerve problems, and other conditions can cause similar symptoms.

If a joint becomes suddenly very painful, swollen, hot/red, particularly with fever, seek prompt medical attention because an infection or another urgent problem needs to be ruled out.
