5 Exercises That Could Harm You in Old Age

5 Exercises That Could Be Riskier in Older Age

  1. Heavy barbell squats
Heavy loading can place substantial demands on the knees, hips, and lower back, particularly when technique or mobility is limited. Safer modification: bodyweight squats to a chair or controlled sit-to-stands.

  2. High-impact jumping exercises
Box jumps, jump squats, and repeated jumping can increase impact on the knees, ankles, and hips and may increase fall risk in people with balance problems. Alternative: controlled step-ups or low-impact cardio.

  3. Heavy deadlifts
Deadlifts aren’t automatically bad, but heavy or poorly performed repetitions can stress the lower back. Alternative: lighter resistance with careful technique and gradual progression.

  4. Behind-the-neck presses or pulldowns
These movements can put the shoulder into a demanding position, especially when shoulder mobility is restricted. Alternative: front presses or pulldowns performed within a comfortable range.

  5. Fast, uncontrolled twisting exercise
