Your legs are the first to weaken! Eat these 6 foods to strengthen them

“Your legs are the first to weaken! Eat these 6 foods to strengthen them” — what’s actually true?

The headline is partly right but oversimplified. Aging is associated with gradual loss of muscle mass and strength, but your legs aren’t necessarily the “first” part of the body to weaken. The good news is that muscle loss can often be slowed—and strength can improve—with the right combination of resistance exercise and adequate nutrition.

🍽️ Six foods that can support strong muscles

1. Eggs 🥚
A convenient source of complete, high-quality protein.

2. Fish 🐟
Salmon, trout, tuna and other fish provide protein; fatty fish also supply omega-3 fats.

3. Greek yogurt or other dairy 🥛
Provides protein plus calcium and, depending on the product, vitamin D.

4. Chicken or other lean poultry 🍗
A concentrated source of protein and essential amino acids.

5. Beans and lentils 🫘
Provide protein along with fiber and other nutrients.

6. Nuts, seeds and soy foods 🌱
Nuts, seeds, tofu and other soy foods provide protein and useful nutrients; soy is also a complete plant protein.

💪 Food alone isn’t enough

If the goal is actually to strengthen your legs, resistance training is crucial. Squats, sit-to-stand exercises, resistance bands and appropriately chosen weights stimulate muscles much more directly than any particular food. NIH guidance recommends muscle-strengthening activity at least 2 days per week, progressing gradually.

Adequate protein is important too. Expert recommendations for healthy older adults commonly fall around 1.0–1.2 g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, although individual needs vary, particularly with kidney disease or other medical conditions.
