“If you always sleep on your right side, you should have…” — What does the evidence say?

This type of headline often implies that sleeping on your right side is dangerous or that you need a special remedy. That’s misleading.

For most healthy adults, sleeping on your right side is perfectly normal and safe. There isn’t good evidence that routinely sleeping on the right side damages your heart or other organs.

🫀 One important exception: acid reflux

If you frequently experience heartburn or GERD, the left side may be preferable. Mayo Clinic recommends starting sleep on your left side because it can make nighttime reflux less likely.

🤰 Pregnancy is different

During pregnancy, side sleeping is generally encouraged, particularly later in pregnancy. Either side can be comfortable, although the left side is sometimes preferred. You don’t need to panic if you wake up on your back or right side.

🛏️ If you prefer the right side

There’s no need to force yourself to switch simply because of an internet claim. If you have back or hip discomfort, placing a pillow between your knees can help keep your spine, pelvis and hips better aligned.

More broadly, sleep quality depends much more on getting enough consistent, restorative sleep than on choosing one universally “correct” side. The American Heart Association identifies sleep duration, regularity, continuity and daytime functioning as important components of healthy sleep.
