Why Daily Showers After 65 May Do More Harm Than Good
The headline is partly true but misleading. Being over 65 doesn’t mean you should stop showering every day. The concern is that frequent, long, hot showers and harsh soaps can worsen age-related dry and fragile skin. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that skin becomes thinner and loses water more easily with age. American Academy of Dermatology+1
What can go wrong?
- Dry, itchy skin: Older skin produces less natural oil, and hot water can strip those oils away. NIA
- Irritation and cracking: Excessively dry skin can become rough, cracked, and uncomfortable.
- Greater susceptibility to skin problems: Older adults can be more prone to skin infections, particularly when skin becomes damaged or when circulation or diabetes is an issue. NIA
- Falls: Bath oils and slippery bathroom surfaces can increase fall risk. American Academy of Dermatology
đźšż You don’t necessarily need to shower less
If you prefer a daily shower and your skin tolerates it, there’s no blanket rule saying you shouldn’t shower every day.
Instead:
- Keep showers around 5–10 minutes.
- Use warm rather than hot water.
- Choose a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser.
- You don’t necessarily need to soap every inch of your body every day; focus cleanser where it’s needed.
- Pat your skin dry rather than vigorously rubbing it.
- Apply a fragrance-free cream or ointment while your skin is still slightly damp, ideally within a few minutes of bathing. American Academy of Dermatology+1
The AAD specifically says some older adults may not need to bathe every day, particularly when dealing with dry skin. American Academy of Dermatology
When to talk to a doctor
If your skin becomes persistently very dry, itchy, cracked, painful, develops sores, or repeatedly becomes infected, don’t simply assume it’s aging. Certain medications and medical conditions—including kidney disease—can contribute to severe dryness and itching. American Academy of Dermatology+1
Bottom line: The problem isn’t “daily showering after 65.” It’s hot, lengthy showers and harsh cleansing that strip already-fragile skin of its protective oils. A short, warm shower followed by moisturizer can be perfectly reasonable—even every day.
