What Is The Normal Blood Pressure For Each Age

What Is the Normal Blood Pressure for Each Age?

Blood pressure doesn’t have one “normal” number for every age. In adults, including older adults, healthy blood pressure is generally around below 120/80 mmHg. The appropriate treatment target can vary based on a person’s health and circumstances.

Adults
Category Systolic (top) Diastolic (bottom)
Normal <120 and <80
Elevated 120–129 and <80
High — Stage 1 130–139 or 80–89
High — Stage 2 ≥140 or ≥90
Severely high ≥180 and/or ≥120

These categories use commonly used U.S. definitions; guidelines in other countries can differ somewhat.

👶 Children are different

For children, there isn’t a simple age-only chart. Normal blood pressure depends on age, sex, and height, so adult thresholds shouldn’t be applied to young children.

👵 What about people over 60 or 70?

It’s a myth that high blood pressure automatically becomes “normal” with age. Older adults commonly develop hypertension, but it still matters. A doctor may choose an individualized blood-pressure goal depending on medications, frailty, cardiovascular risk, and other medical conditions.

How to get an accurate reading
Sit quietly for about 5 minutes beforehand.
Keep both feet flat on the floor and your back supported.
Rest your arm at heart level.
Avoid caffeine, exercise, and smoking for about 30 minutes beforehand.
Take two readings about one minute apart and record them.

One elevated reading doesn’t necessarily mean you have hypertension; repeated measurements are more useful.

🚨 When is it an emergency?

If your reading is 180/120 mmHg or higher, wait at least a minute and repeat it. If it remains that high, contact a healthcare professional promptly. If you also have chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness/numbness, confusion, severe headache, or vision changes, seek emergency medical care immediately.

If you give me your age and a recent blood-pressure reading (for example, 145/85), I can explain what that reading means.
