Vinegar is the key to whiter whites and softer towels, but most use it wrong. Here’s the right way to use it

Vinegar for Whiter Whites and Softer Towels: The Right Way

White vinegar can be useful in laundry, particularly for reducing detergent residue and mineral buildup that can make towels feel stiff. But it isn’t a miracle bleach, and using it incorrectly can damage fabrics or create a dangerous chemical reaction.

🧺 How to use it

For towels:
Add about ½ cup (120 mL) of distilled white vinegar to the washing machine’s fabric-softener dispenser during the rinse cycle. For a large load, some manufacturers recommend up to 1 cup, but check your washer’s instructions first.

The vinegar can help remove detergent and mineral residue, allowing towels to feel less stiff.

For white clothing:
Use your normal detergent and wash according to the garment’s care label. Vinegar may help with odors and residue, but it does not replace chlorine bleach for whitening heavily stained whites.

⚠️ The most important rule

Never mix vinegar with chlorine bleach.

The combination can produce chlorine gas, which can cause serious respiratory and eye irritation.

Also don’t mix vinegar with other cleaning products unless the manufacturer specifically says the combination is safe.

🚫 Don’t use vinegar on everything

Repeated exposure to acidic vinegar may damage or shorten the life of certain materials, including some rubber components, elastic materials and delicate finishes. Whirlpool, for example, advises against using vinegar as a fabric softener in its washing machines because repeated use can damage machine components. (whirlpool.com)

So the safest approach is to check your washing-machine and clothing manufacturer’s instructions before making vinegar a regular part of your laundry routine
