How to Get Rid of Phlegm and Mucus in Chest and Throat Naturally

How to Loosen Phlegm and Mucus Naturally

Phlegm often accompanies a cold, viral respiratory infection, allergies, asthma, smoking, or post-nasal drip. The goal is usually to thin the mucus and make it easier to clear rather than trying to “flush” it out.

  • Drink plenty of fluids to help keep mucus thinner.
  • Use warm liquids, such as tea or broth, to soothe an irritated throat.
  • Take a warm shower or breathe humidified air if it helps you feel less congested. Avoid very hot steam, which can cause burns.
  • Use saline nasal spray or a saline rinse if mucus is coming from post-nasal drip. Use properly prepared/distilled or previously boiled and cooled water for nasal irrigation.
  • Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke, which can increase mucus and airway irritation.
  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated if mucus and coughing are worse when lying down.
  • Cough gently rather than repeatedly forcing a cough, which can further irritate your throat.

Honey can soothe cough in adults and children over 1 year old, but it doesn’t eliminate an underlying infection.

When to get medical help

Seek medical care if you have difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing up blood, persistent high fever, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. A cough that lasts several weeks or keeps returning also deserves evaluation.

The color of phlegm alone doesn’t reliably tell you whether you need antibiotics; symptoms and their duration matter more.
