The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in Throat and How to Get Rid of It!

Constant phlegm or a “lump of mucus” in the throat is often not caused by too much mucus being produced. More commonly, something is irritating the nose, sinuses, throat, or airways and causing persistent secretions or the sensation of mucus.

Common causes

  1. Post-nasal drip — Allergies, sinus inflammation, colds, or irritants can cause mucus to drain from the nose into the throat.

  2. Acid reflux (including silent reflux) — Stomach contents irritating the throat can cause throat clearing, mucus sensation, hoarseness, or coughing, sometimes without obvious heartburn.

  3. Allergies — Dust, pollen, mold, pets, and other allergens can produce ongoing nasal secretions.

  4. Smoking or vaping — Both can irritate the airways and increase mucus production.

  5. Asthma or chronic airway inflammation — Especially when mucus is accompanied by coughing, wheezing, or chest tightness.

  6. Dehydration or dry air — Can make normal mucus thicker and more noticeable.

  7. Chronic sinus problems or infection — More likely when there is persistent nasal congestion, facial pressure, reduced smell, or discolored drainage.
