This is a cure for arthritis, lupus, dizziness, thyroid problems and chronic fatigue” — be very cautious
That is an extraordinary claim. A single food, herb, vitamin, or supplement should not be presented as a treatment for all of these conditions.
In particular:
- Lupus: There is currently no cure. Treatment is aimed at controlling inflammation, preventing organ damage, and managing symptoms. Research has not established that special diets or supplements can treat or cure lupus.
- Thyroid disease: Treatment depends on the specific disorder. For hypothyroidism, thyroid-hormone replacement such as levothyroxine is standard treatment; the American Thyroid Association recommends against using dietary supplements as a treatment for hypothyroidism.
- Arthritis: There are many different types, with very different causes and treatments. A remedy that might help symptoms in one form of arthritis doesn’t necessarily treat another.
- Dizziness: This is a symptom, not one disease. Causes range from dehydration and medication effects to inner-ear disorders, anemia, heart problems, or neurological conditions.
- Chronic fatigue: Persistent fatigue also has many possible causes, including anemia, thyroid disorders, sleep disorders, medications, infections and mental-health conditions. Treating the underlying cause is important.
🚩 The biggest warning sign
When one product claims to treat several unrelated diseases at once, that’s a reason to demand strong clinical evidence. NIH’s NCCIH specifically advises being skeptical of products claiming to cure a disease or work for a wide variety of ailments.
Don’t replace prescribed medication with the advertised remedy, particularly for lupus or thyroid disease. Some supplements can also interact with medications or, in the case of iodine-containing products, actually worsen certain thyroid disorders.
