Scratches on Glasses: Don’t Fall for the “Instant Fix”
That viral claim is misleading. There is no household ingredient that can safely make genuine scratches on modern eyeglass lenses disappear instantly.
❌ Don’t use these “hacks”
You may see recommendations for:
- Toothpaste
- Baking soda
- Car wax
- Furniture polish
- Abrasive powders
These can damage the lens surface and remove or disrupt protective coatings, including anti-reflective, UV, and tint coatings. The scratch may temporarily look less noticeable because material or coating has been altered—but the lens hasn’t actually been repaired.
✅ What to do instead
- Rinse the lenses with clean water to remove dust and grit.
- Use a small amount of mild dish soap or a lens cleaner recommended for eyewear.
- Gently dry with a clean microfiber lens cloth.
- If the scratch remains and interferes with your vision, take the glasses to an optician. In many cases, replacing the scratched lens is the safest solution.
One important distinction
If what looks like a scratch is actually dried residue, grease, or a coating smudge, proper cleaning may make it disappear. But a physical scratch has removed or damaged part of the lens surface and generally can’t simply be rubbed away.
