Scratches on glasses: don’t waste money: apply a little and they’ll disappear instantly.

Be careful with this viral “scratch-removal” claim: there’s no household substance that can make genuine scratches in eyeglass lenses disappear instantly. Rubbing toothpaste, baking soda, glass polish, or abrasive cleaners can actually make the lens surface worse or damage protective coatings.

What you can do instead

  • For smudges or residue: Rinse with lukewarm water, then use a drop of mild dish soap and a clean microfiber cloth.
  • For tiny surface marks: Have an optician inspect them. Some marks may actually be coating damage rather than scratches.
  • For deep or numerous scratches: Replacing the lenses is generally the safest solution.
  • Avoid: toothpaste, baking soda, car polish, glass-cleaning products, paper towels, and rough fabrics.

If these are prescription glasses, don’t try an abrasive “hack” on them—the anti-reflective, scratch-resistant, or other lens coatings can be permanently damaged.
