One vitamin that opens blood vessels and improves circulation

If you’re referring to the common claim that one vitamin can “open blood vessels” and dramatically improve circulation, the vitamin most often associated with this effect is vitamin B3 (niacin).

What niacin actually does

At pharmacological doses, niacin can cause vasodilation and skin flushing, making blood vessels widen temporarily. However, that does not mean taking niacin is a safe or effective general treatment for poor circulation.

High-dose niacin can cause serious side effects, including liver injury, low blood pressure, increased blood glucose, and gastrointestinal problems. It should not be taken in large doses for circulation without medical supervision.

For circulation problems, the underlying cause matters. Peripheral artery disease, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, and cardiovascular disease can all contribute, and they require appropriate treatment.

Bottom line: There is no vitamin supplement proven to universally “open blocked arteries.” If you have cold feet, leg pain when walking, numbness, or wounds that heal slowly, it’s better to get the cause evaluated rather than relying on a vitamin.
