If you always sleep on your right side, should you worry?

Usually, no. Sleeping on your right side isn’t inherently unhealthy, and there isn’t a vitamin, supplement, or special food you need simply because you sleep on that side.

However, sleeping position can matter for certain conditions:

  • Acid reflux: Some people with reflux may have fewer nighttime symptoms when sleeping on their left side rather than their right.

  • Shoulder or hip pain: Staying on one side for hours can aggravate pressure-sensitive joints. A pillow between the knees and a supportive pillow for your head can help.

  • Pregnancy: Side sleeping is generally recommended later in pregnancy, with individual advice from a healthcare professional.

  • Snoring/sleep apnea: Side sleeping can sometimes reduce airway obstruction compared with sleeping flat on the back, although it doesn’t treat sleep apnea by itself.

One important myth

You may see claims that right-side sleeping damages the heart or that you must sleep on your left side to protect it. For most healthy people, there is no need to change sides solely for heart protection.

If you regularly wake with chest pain, significant shortness of breath, choking/gasping, or severe daytime sleepiness, the issue is worth discussing with a healthcare professional rather than simply changing your sleeping position.
