My neighbor taught me this trick to clean green algae off siding with 0 effort. Here’s how it works

If you’re looking for a low-effort way to remove green algae from house siding, the trick is usually to let the cleaning solution do the work rather than aggressively scrubbing.

A simple method

  1. Choose an overcast day so the solution doesn’t dry too quickly.

  2. Rinse the siding gently with a garden hose to remove loose dirt.

  3. Mix warm water with a small amount of dishwashing liquid in a bucket.

  4. Apply it to the algae-covered areas with a soft brush or pump sprayer.

  5. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes—don’t let it dry.

  6. Gently rinse from top to bottom with a garden hose.

  7. Repeat stubborn areas rather than using aggressive pressure.

For persistent algae, a properly diluted exterior siding/algae cleaner can work better than dish soap. Follow the product label exactly.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Don’t use a pressure washer at close range on vinyl, painted, or damaged siding; it can force water behind the siding or damage the finish.

  • Don’t mix bleach with ammonia, acids, vinegar, or other cleaners—dangerous gases can result.

  • Protect plants and landscaping from runoff, and test any cleaner on an inconspicuous area first.

If you tell me whether your siding is vinyl, aluminum, wood, stucco, or painted, I can give you the safest low-effort recipe for that specific material.
