“Just 1 oregano leaf per day and you won’t suffer from…” — Is this true?

This is most likely another viral health claim with the important part of the headline cut off. Eating a small amount of oregano as a food is generally safe, but there is no good evidence that one oregano leaf per day prevents or cures a particular disease.

What oregano can actually provide

Oregano contains plant compounds such as carvacrol and thymol and can contribute antioxidants to the diet. Laboratory research has found antimicrobial effects, but results from laboratory studies do not mean that eating one leaf treats an infection or disease in humans.

🌿 What about oregano oil?

Be careful not to confuse an oregano leaf with concentrated oregano oil. Oregano used in normal food amounts is considered safe, while there isn’t enough reliable evidence to establish a safe medicinal dose of oregano or oregano oil. Larger amounts can cause stomach upset and may interact with medications.

Oregano may be particularly relevant if someone takes blood-thinning medicines or diabetes medications, because medicinal amounts may increase bleeding risk or lower blood sugar.
