If You Eat Bananas at Night, You’ll Increase Your…?You may have seen a headline claiming that eating a banana at night will dramatically increase sleep, potassium, or another health benefit. The reality is more moderate.

🍌 Bananas at bedtime

Bananas provide potassium and other nutrients. A medium banana contains about 420 mg of potassium.

There is also some evidence that eating a banana before bed may improve sleep quality. One small 2024 study involving 21 people with insomnia found improvements in reported sleep quality after six weeks of bedtime banana consumption. However, the study was small, so it isn’t enough to prove that bananas reliably improve sleep for everyone.

What about blood sugar?

A banana contains natural carbohydrates, so it can raise blood glucose. For most healthy people, eating one banana at night is not a problem. People with diabetes should consider the banana as part of their overall carbohydrate intake.

⚠️ One important exception

If you have chronic kidney disease or have been told your potassium is high, don’t assume bananas are automatically safe. Kidney problems can make it harder for the body to regulate potassium.
