How to Use Baking Soda to Remove Dark Spots, Wrinkles, and Dark Circles from Your Face

How to Use Baking Soda for Dark Spots, Wrinkles, and Dark Circles

The important truth is that baking soda is not a proven treatment for dark spots, wrinkles, or dark circles. In fact, putting baking soda directly on your face can irritate the skin because it is alkaline and can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier. (Healthline)

❌ Don’t use a baking-soda face mask

Avoid recipes that tell you to mix baking soda with lemon juice, vinegar, toothpaste, or other acidic ingredients and apply the mixture to your face. Irritation can actually make pigmentation worse, particularly in people prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. (American Academy of Dermatology)

What works better for dark spots

  • Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen is one of the most important steps because UV and visible light can worsen pigmentation and accelerate skin aging. (American Academy of Dermatology)
  • Ingredients such as azelaic acid, vitamin C, glycolic acid, kojic acid, and retinoids have better evidence for fading certain types of dark spots. (American Academy of Dermatology)
  • Be patient: pigmentation can take months to fade, depending on its cause and depth.

For wrinkles

A properly formulated retinoid/retinol product has considerably better evidence than baking soda for improving fine lines and photoaged skin. Start cautiously because retinoids can cause irritation and increase sun sensitivity. (American Academy of Dermatology)

For dark circles

Dark circles aren’t always caused by pigmentation. They can result from genetics, thin skin, shadows from facial anatomy, allergies, lack of sleep, or blood vessels showing through the skin. Consequently, baking soda won’t reliably remove them.

Bottom line: Don’t scrub your face with baking soda in hopes of erasing wrinkles or pigmentation. A gentle cleanser, moisturizer, daily sunscreen, and appropriately selected active ingredient are much safer and better-supported approaches.
