How to Remove Set-In Grease Stains From Laundry

Set-in grease stains can be stubborn because oil bonds with fabric fibers over time. The good news is that many older stains can still be improved with the right approach.

What You’ll Need

  • Dishwashing liquid (preferably a grease-cutting formula)
  • Baking soda (optional)
  • A soft toothbrush or small brush
  • Laundry detergent
  • Warm water (if the fabric allows)

Step-by-Step Method

  1. Check the care label
    • Make sure the fabric can handle the cleaning method and water temperature you plan to use.
  2. Apply dish soap directly to the stain
    • Put a few drops of grease-cutting dish soap on the affected area.
    • Gently rub it into the fabric with your fingers or a soft brush.
  3. Let it sit
    • Leave it for 15–30 minutes to allow the soap to break down the oil.
    • For older stains, you may need to repeat this step or let it sit longer.
  4. Add baking soda for extra cleaning power (optional)
    • Sprinkle baking soda over the soapy area and gently scrub.
    • It can help absorb loosened grease and lift residue.
  5. Wash normally
    • Wash the garment using the warmest water recommended on the care label.
    • Add your regular laundry detergent.
  6. Air-dry and check
    • Do not put the item in the dryer until the stain is gone. Heat can permanently set remaining grease.
    • If the stain remains, repeat the treatment.

Extra Tips

  • For delicate fabrics like silk or wool, avoid aggressive scrubbing and consider professional cleaning.
  • For white cotton items, a small amount of oxygen-based stain remover may help lift old grease marks.
  • Avoid rubbing grease stains with water alone first—water does not dissolve oil and can make treatment harder.

With patience and repeated treatment, even older grease stains often become much less noticeable.
