10 Early Signs of Dementia You Should Never Ignore

Dementia isn’t a normal part of getting older. The important clue is usually a persistent change from a person’s normal abilities, especially when it begins interfering with everyday life.

  1. Memory loss that affects daily life — repeatedly forgetting recent conversations, appointments, or important information.

  2. Repeating questions or stories — asking the same thing multiple times without remembering the previous answer.

  3. Difficulty doing familiar tasks — struggling with cooking a familiar meal, using household appliances, or managing routine activities.

  4. Getting lost in familiar places — having trouble following a previously familiar route or becoming confused about where they are.

  5. Difficulty finding words — frequently losing track of conversations or having unusual difficulty expressing or understanding ideas.

  6. Problems with planning or problem-solving — increasing difficulty managing bills, medications, finances, or other routine responsibilities.

  7. Misplacing objects unusually often — putting things in inappropriate places and being unable to retrace their steps.

  8. Poor judgment — new, noticeable problems with decisions involving money, safety, or personal care.

  9. Changes in personality or behavior — unusual apathy, irritability, suspicion, anxiety, or social withdrawal.

  10. Problems with visual or spatial abilities — difficulty judging distances, navigating spaces, recognizing objects, or reading.

One important distinction

Occasional forgetfulness can happen with normal aging. Progressive changes that interfere with independence are different and should be evaluated. Some problems that resemble dementia can have treatable causes, so a medical assessment is worthwhile.

Sudden confusion or a sudden change in mental status is not typical gradual dementia. It can indicate a medical emergency such as a stroke, infection, medication reaction, or metabolic problem and should receive prompt medical attention.
