How to Make Your Jewelry Shine Again: A Simple Cleaning Method

Over time, jewelry can lose its sparkle because of dust, skin oils, sweat, lotions, makeup, and everyday exposure to moisture. Fortunately, many everyday pieces can be cleaned at home using a few simple items.

What You’ll Need

  • A small bowl

  • Warm water

  • A few drops of mild dishwashing liquid

  • A very soft toothbrush or jewelry brush

  • A soft, lint-free microfiber cloth

  • A clean towel

Step-by-Step Cleaning Method

1. Prepare a gentle cleaning solution

Fill a small bowl with warm—not hot—water. Add a few drops of mild dish soap and mix gently.

Avoid strong detergents, bleach, chlorine, or abrasive cleaners. These can damage certain metals, finishes, or gemstones.

2. Soak the jewelry briefly

Place suitable jewelry in the solution for about 5–10 minutes. This helps loosen oils and dirt trapped around clasps, settings, and decorative details.

Important: Don’t automatically soak every piece. Jewelry containing porous or delicate materials—such as pearls, opals, turquoise, or some glued settings—can be damaged by water or prolonged soaking.

3. Gently brush away dirt

Use a very soft toothbrush to clean hard-to-reach areas. Work gently, especially around gemstones and delicate settings.

Don’t scrub aggressively. Excessive friction can scratch softer metals or stones.

4. Rinse carefully

Rinse the jewelry with clean, lukewarm water to remove soap residue.

For small pieces, it’s safer to rinse them over a bowl or with the drain closed so they don’t accidentally disappear down the sink.
