How to Get Rid of Phlegm and Mucus in Chest and Throat Naturally

How to clear phlegm and mucus naturally

Phlegm is often produced to protect and clear the airways. The goal is usually to thin the mucus and help your body clear it, rather than eliminate mucus completely.

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Hydration can make thick mucus easier to cough up.

  • Have warm fluids, such as warm water or tea. Honey can soothe coughing and throat irritation; don’t give honey to children under 1 year.

  • Gargle with warm salt water: about ½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water, then spit it out.

  • Use a clean humidifier or take a warm shower to add moisture to the air. Avoid inhaling steam directly from boiling water because of burn risk.

  • Try saline nasal spray/rinse if mucus is coming from your nose or sinuses and draining into your throat.

  • Stay gently active, such as taking short walks, unless you’re feeling unwell.

  • Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke, which can increase mucus and airway irritation.

  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated if mucus and coughing are worse at night.

Don’t rely on mucus color alone

Yellow or green phlegm doesn’t automatically mean you need antibiotics. Viral infections, allergies, postnasal drip, asthma, reflux, smoking, and chronic lung diseases can all cause mucus.

When to get medical help

Contact a healthcare professional if the problem is persistent or recurrent, or you have fever, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pain, unexplained weight loss, or blood in your phlegm.

Get urgent medical care for severe difficulty breathing, significant chest pain, or substantial amounts of blood when coughing.

If you tell me how long you’ve had the mucus, its color, whether you have cough/fever/wheezing, and your age, I can help you work out the most likely causes and appropriate next steps.
