How to Clean Dirty Bed Pillows and Make Them Fresh Again
Yellowing and odors are usually caused by sweat, body oils, saliva, hair products, and accumulated dirt. The best cleaning method depends on what’s inside the pillow.
🧺 For washable polyester or down-alternative pillows
- Check the care label first.
- Wash two pillows together to help balance the washing machine.
- Use a gentle cycle, cool or warm water, and a small amount of mild detergent.
- Run an extra rinse if there’s detergent residue.
- Dry according to the label, generally on low heat or air-dry.
- Make absolutely sure the pillow is completely dry inside before using it.
If the pillow has yellow stains, don’t automatically use chlorine bleach. Some manufacturers specifically advise against bleach or harsh detergents.
🪶 Down or feather pillows
Many can be washed, but not all. Use a small amount of mild/down-safe detergent, a delicate cycle, and cool or warm water. An extra rinse helps remove detergent. Dry thoroughly on low heat, fluffing between cycles to prevent clumps.
🚫 Memory foam and latex
Don’t throw solid memory-foam pillows into the washing machine or dryer. Moisture and agitation can damage the foam. For ordinary dirt or odors, spot-clean with mild detergent; baking soda can be used dry to absorb odors and then vacuumed away.
🌸 How to make them smell fresh
The safest “fresh smell” comes from proper cleaning and complete drying, rather than heavily perfuming the pillow. For some feather/down pillows, a dry baking-soda treatment can help with odors.
