How to Water Geraniums for More Flowers

There isn’t a secret watering recipe that guarantees endless blooms. The key is avoiding both drought stress and constantly wet soil.

💧 The best watering method

1. Check the soil first. For container geraniums, water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feels dry.
2. Water thoroughly, rather than giving a tiny amount every day. Let excess water drain from the bottom of the pot.
3. Empty standing water from the saucer. Constantly wet roots can lead to root rot.
4. Water the soil, not the leaves and flowers, when possible. Wet foliage can encourage disease.
5. In hot weather, check containers more frequently because they can dry out quickly. Hanging baskets may need especially frequent watering.

🌞 Water isn’t the whole secret to abundant flowers

Geraniums generally flower best with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. Regularly removing faded flowers (deadheading) also encourages additional blooms.

For container plants, a dilute fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during active growth can also support flowering. Avoid excessive fertilizer, though, because too much can reduce blooming.
