Why Daily Showers After 65 May Do More Harm Than Good

Daily showers aren’t inherently harmful after 65. The bigger issue is how you shower and what you use on your skin. As people age, skin often becomes thinner, drier, and more easily irritated.

What can cause problems?
Very hot water can strip natural oils and worsen dryness and itching.
Long showers increase exposure to water and heat, which can further dry the skin.
Harsh or heavily fragranced soaps can irritate sensitive skin.
Aggressive scrubbing can damage the skin barrier.
Not moisturizing afterward can leave already-dry skin even more uncomfortable.
A gentler approach

You don’t necessarily need to stop showering every day. If daily showers work for you, try lukewarm water, shorter showers, a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and moisturizer immediately afterward. You can concentrate cleanser on areas that actually need it rather than vigorously soaping the entire body.

If you’re experiencing persistent itching, rashes, cracking, sores, or unexplained changes in your skin, it’s worth discussing them with a healthcare professional rather than assuming they’re simply due to aging.
