Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl

The viral “one kitchen item” trick is usually plastic wrap around the banana stems. 🍌

Bananas naturally release ethylene gas, which speeds up ripening. Wrapping the crown/stems can reduce ethylene exposure and may slow the process.

Try this

  • Separate the bananas if you want them to ripen more slowly.

  • Wrap the stem/crown with a small piece of plastic wrap.

  • Keep unripe bananas at room temperature, away from direct sunlight.

  • Once they’re ripe, refrigeration can extend their edible life. The peel may turn brown or black, but the fruit inside can remain perfectly good.

  • Avoid storing bananas right next to other ripe, ethylene-producing fruit.

The claim that this always makes bananas last exactly 10 days longer isn’t reliable. Temperature, variety, ripeness when purchased, and handling all affect shelf life.

A simple alternative is to hang the bananas on a hook rather than leaving them pressed together in a fruit bowl, which can reduce bruising.
