Grandpa’s Simple Trick for Sharpening Lawn Mower Blades
A healthy, beautiful lawn starts with a mower that cuts rather than tears the grass. One of the most overlooked parts of mower maintenance is blade sharpness.
Dull blades can leave ragged, brown-looking grass tips and make the mower work harder. Fortunately, sharpening a blade doesn’t have to be complicated.

A sharp blade makes a clean cut, while a dull one tends to tear and bruise the grass. Keeping the blade reasonably sharp can help your lawn look cleaner and can make mowing more efficient.
You don’t need to turn the blade into a razor. The goal is a consistent, reasonably sharp cutting edge.
🔧 The Simple Sharpening Trick
One of the easiest methods is to use a hand file.
- Turn the mower off completely. Disconnect the spark-plug wire on a gas mower, or remove the battery on a battery-powered model.
- Prevent the blade from moving.
- Remove the blade according to your mower manufacturer’s instructions. This is safer and makes it easier to sharpen accurately.
- Clamp the blade securely in a vise.
- Using a metal file, follow the existing bevel of the cutting edge. Push the file in one direction rather than rapidly sawing back and forth.
- Sharpen the other end to approximately the same degree.
- Check the blade’s balance before reinstalling it. An unbalanced blade can cause vibration and potentially damage the mower.
- Reinstall and tighten the blade according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
