My Nana Swore by This: Mix 2 Things With Vaseline to Erase Wrinkles?

Vaseline (petroleum jelly) can be useful for reducing moisture loss and protecting the skin barrier, but there’s no mixture that can permanently “erase wrinkles.” Be cautious with viral DIY recipes, especially those containing lemon juice, baking soda, toothpaste, or increasing hydration, but it can’t permanently remove wrinkles. A simple moisturizer + daily sunscreen essential oils, which can irritate or burn skin.

A safer simple routine

If you want to use petroleum jelly for dry, lined skin:

  1. Wash your face gently with a mild cleanser.

  2. Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer to slightly damp skin.

  3. Apply a very thin layer of petroleum jelly over dry areas at night to help seal in moisture.

  4. In the morning, use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen. Sun protection is one of the most important measures for preventing further photoaging.

For wrinkles specifically, topical retinoids such as retinol have substantially more evidence than homemade mixtures for improving the appearance of fine lines. They can irritate sensitive skin, so start gradually and follow product directions.

Bottom line: Vaseline can make dry skin look smoother temporarily by increasing hydration, but it can’t permanently remove wrinkles. A simple moisturizer + daily sunscreen, with an appropriate retinoid if tolerated, is a more evidence-based approach.
