Orchids Don’t Need Sugar — and It Can Do More Harm Than Good 🌸
That viral gardening claim is misleading. Orchids need nutrients, but table sugar isn’t a fertilizer and doesn’t provide the essential minerals an orchid needs for healthy growth.
Sugar provides carbohydrates, while plants generally produce their own sugars through photosynthesis. Adding sugar to orchid potting media can instead encourage microbial growth and potentially disrupt the root environment.
For healthy orchids, focus on:
Bright, indirect light
Good drainage and an appropriate orchid potting mix
Watering when the plant needs it, rather than keeping roots constantly wet
A balanced orchid fertilizer, used according to the product’s directions
Adequate air circulation and appropriate temperature
If an orchid has weak roots or isn’t blooming, sugar won’t magically revive it. Improving light, watering practices, root health, and nutrition is much more reliable.
So, despite the catchy “plain sugar” advice: save the sugar for your coffee and give your orchid proper plant nutrition instead. 🌱☕
